Round 12 - Allington Lane
26th September 2004
“Urry
in a hurry”
Report
by Kay Turner
Portsmouth
Motocross Club held the 12th round of their Summer Club Championship
at Allington Lane this weekend. Saturdays
rain ensured the track was in perfect condition for the 200 riders who turned
up, an unusually low turnout due to the BYMX Annual Team Event.
Those who attended didn’t let the club down and provided some
spectacular racing, with the VMX out first to wet everyone’s appetite.
With the usual
trio of Paine, Sait and Bradbury taking charge, it was left to Chad Sait to take
the victory after Richard Paine DNF’d the second race.
Sait finished 2nd in race one and won the two remaining motos.
Martin Bradbury, still battling for that all-important win, had to settle
for second overall. Riding on two
different bikes due to his own bike packing up on the line in race one, he
fought to finish in 2nd and 3rd twice.
Paul Rusby enjoyed a better days racing than son Oliver, who crashed
heavily in the last race. Tiring
progressively through the day, Rusby finished in 4th, 5th
and 6th. A brilliant
performance by Dave “Gomez” Lopez who was rewarded with fourth overall, his
best result being a 3rd in race two, joined by two 7ths.
A disastrous race one which resulted in a 10th placing, Jason
Skinner scrambled his way back up the order to finish 4th in the
remaining races. With the four
stroke completely out of his system, Darren Miles reappears in the top 6,
finishing in sixth overall. Two
5ths and an 8th proved the 125cc suits Darren down to the ground.
With two riders
dominating the racing, the AMX blasted up the start straight to provide some
breathtaking racing. David Needham
led the 17 riders around the twisty track from start to finish in all three
motos, with Paul Watts following closely behind.
Watts left it till the last race to try to get the lead, and with one
more lap he may have managed it. But
the chequered flag was shown and the overall victory was awarded to Needham,
with Watts taking second overall with three 2nds.
Third overall goes to Ian Smith, roaring around the track on his mighty
four stroke. Two 4ths and a 6th
gave Smith a truly deserved top three position.
Fourth overall goes to Jay Tucker who rode consistently well all day,
finishing 5th in each race. Phil
Lewis, riding in maybe his last race of the season, finished in fifth overall.
Heading for third overall with two 3rds, Lewis trailed in in 14th
place in race three, a disappointing end to his day.
To close the top 6 comes James Blanchard who didn’t have the best of
starts by finishing in 14th in race one, but the talented youngster
rode at his best in races two and three, finishing 4th and 3rd
respectively.
The Spectacular
Seniors were out next with some highflying action being provided by the usual
clan. Putting a spanner in the
works in race one, recently upgraded Jamie Tempest flew out of the gate to lead
race one but sadly he couldn’t hold on to the lead.
As usual, Luke Blanchard took over and took control of races one and two,
winning both. Coming in 3rd
in race three gave Blanchard the overall victory.
Ever present at the top, Nicky Watts chased Blanchard in race one to
finish 2nd, had to settle for 3rd in race two, but
dominated race three and led the rest of the pack to win, giving Watts second
overall. Very close in contention
but not able to grasp a win, Sean Barnsdale finished in third overall, with a 3rd
and two brilliant 2nds. Fourth
overall comes Alex Martin. A great
days racing by Martin, starting with a 7th, but finished the day on a
high by passing the finish flag in 5th and 4th.
After such a spectacular start, Jamie Tempest managed to get into the top
six in his first Senior meeting. Donning
‘L’ plates, Tempest rode brilliantly proving what a fantastic rider this
likeable young lad is, and a win in this class is just around the corner.
A 4th in race one was followed by two 6ths, as Tempest tired
but still managed to achieve fifth overall.
With one or two unfortunate mishaps, Carl Chandler had to settle for
sixth overall. An 11th
in race one spurred Chandler on to a 4th in race two, but had to
settle for 7th in the final moto.
The Inter Open
class got underway with Thomas Speer taking overall victory again, another
brilliant result to add to his already brilliant season.
Having to finish in 2nd in race one, Speer made sure of his
victory by winning the final two motos. After
ending up in the ambulance at Culham, Daniel Latham was determined to notch up
some all-important Championship points. He
started his day off with a brilliant win, and finished in 2nd in
races two and three to finish just two points behind Speer.
A consistent ride by Lloyd Nightingale rewarded him with third overall,
finishing 3rd in each race. Riding
as determined as ever, Michael Urry finished fourth overall, with two 5ths and
managed to jump one place to finish 4th in race three.
Tying on 104 points, Todd Warner and Craig Durston finished in fifth and
sixth overall respectively. Warner finished 8th, 4th and 9th
with Durston riding smoothly and consistently all day finishing 7th
and 6th twice.
With one of the
largest turnouts seen all season, the Autos battled for space on the track, with
the shock of the season seeing Fraser Viner not in the top 6!
Oliver Osmaston took control of the group finishing first overall.
Finishing 2nd in race one, Osmaston led the way in the
remaining two races. After a
spectacular crash on his last visit to the track, Joshua Broadway remained in
control with two 3rds and a 2nd.
Close behind came Michael Denton in third overall, following Broadway all
day with two 4ths and a 3rd. With
an enormous amount of encouragement, Luke Goddard finished in fourth overall.
Being spurred on all the way from the side of track, Goddard finished in 6th,
4th and 5th. Oliver
McMurray, one of the most improved riders in the group, came in fifth overall,
with two 5ths and a 6th. Closing
the top six came Jamie Strange. An
improved season for this youngster, who still appears too big for his bike,
Strange carved his way though the field in brilliant style.
He was awarded sixth overall for his troubles, finishing with two 7ths
and a 6th.
A very unusual
sight in the Small Wheeled 85 class – spaces on the start gate!
Completely dominating the group in high-flying, spectacular style,
Sebastian Osborne took first overall, with flawless riding all day and some
pretty impressive acrobatics over the jumps.
Osborne won all three races. A
batch of riders tried to close in on Osborne, but didn’t quite manage it.
Closest to him was Danny Urry who finished in second overall, finishing
in 2nd twice and then 3rd. Hot on his tail was Ashley Bailey, finishing in 3rd
twice and edged in front to finish 2nd, finishing third overall.
George Gough enjoyed a good days racing, improving throughout the
meeting, finishing fourth overall with a 6th, 5th and 4th. Finishing in a brilliant fifth overall comes Joe Crocker.
An outstanding result for this ever-improving young rider, Joe started
the day in a brilliant 4th, and continued to stay with the front
runners, finishing 6th in the final two motos.
Closing the top six came Bobby Ellins.
Battling all the way with Crocker, Ellins finished 5th, 7th
and 5th.
Last to go were
the Juniors with Oliver Paine being the master of his class, finishing in first
overall with three brilliant wins. Liam Garland continued his charge to the top finishing second
overall, with a 2nd, 3rd and crossed the line side by side
with visitor Joshua Turner in the final race. He was awarded 4th.
Joshua Turner finished in third overall. Turner, enjoying his visits to the club, rode consistently to
finish 4th in races one and two, and pipped Garland at the post in
race three to finish 3rd. A
brilliant day for Aaron Lopez who finished fourth overall with a 3rd
and fabulous 2nd, but had a disappointing end to his day by coming in
10th. Another rider who
had a great day was James Rennie, who finished in fifth overall. A 7th
and 8th encouraged Rennie to pick up the pace, and he battled his way
through the pack and was rewarded with a brill 2nd.
Closing proceedings came Ryan Monckton who finished sixth overall, with a
6th, 7th and 5th.
A highly enjoyable
day with brilliant racing, excellent riding conditions and the sun managing to
break through to shine down on the small crowd of riders and spectators.
A welcome sight off the track was Richard Leat walking happily amongst
his friends. Glad to see you back
Richard. The bike will soon be
ready for action again, no doubt, so watch out Seniors - he’ll be back soon!!!
